The philosophy behind the taking of photos has changed over time. Back when we used cameras with photo rolls, the number of photos we could take was limited, and we had to make sure that the one we were taking was the best possible since we could not make 8 photos of the same scenario.
That changed drastically with the invention of the digital camera and the smartphone. Nowadays, we take 3, 4 even 5 shots of the same thing until we get the shot we like. That leaves us with a smartphone full of photos that take up a lot of storage. And if we lose the device, we lose our photos. Well, Google found a solution for that and it is called Google Photos.
How it works
When you log into your Google account from your smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android), you grant access to your photos and videos. Google Photos then stores all of your photos, old and new, in the cloud. Every time you take a new shot, Google stores it. That allows you to delete photos from your gallery, knowing that they have been stored somewhere else. Also, you do not have to worry about losing your photos if your device breaks or gets stolen.
Google Photos app on different devices
Google Photos will store the photos from all your devices where you have signed in with your Google Account. That is, for example, if you have the Google Photos app installed on your tablet and smartphone, Google Photos will synchronize photos from both devices. This means that, if you open your Google Photos app from your phone, you will also see the photos you have taken or saved on your tablet. If you open a photo or video and tap the info icon in the top right corner, you will be able to see from which device the photo or video was stored.
Features of the Google Photos app
The Google Photos app stores all your photos in one place, but it does not end there. Here are some interesting features of the Google Photos app:
- Face recognition: On Google Photos, you will see that the app recognizes faces and groups together all the photos of a particular person. It does not matter if the person is alone or with other people in the photo, Google Photos will show you every photo where this person appears.
- Photos per area: Enter the map on Google Photos and find all the photos that were taken at a specific location. This is a great tool when it comes to your holiday photos.
- Save and share with friends: On Google Photos, you can share photos with your friends. You can also create shared albums where different users can add photos.
- Editing tools: The Google Photos app also provides different filters and editing tools to take your shots to the next level. You can also add text to your photos and videos.
- Highlights: Google Photos creates and suggests videos with your most memorable moments that you can then edit to your taste.
Restoring deleted photos on Google Photos
If you want to delete repeated photos or simply photos and videos you are not interested in anymore, you can do so by tapping the trash can icon. Once a photo is deleted, it is stored in the trash folder for 60 days. This means that if you deleted a photo by mistake or just want it back, you have 60 days to change your mind and restore it to its original folder. Once the photo or video is deleted permanently, it is gone, and restoring it is no longer possible.
Pros:
- Store all your photos and videos in one place.
- Share albums with other users.
- Includes editing tools.
Cons:
- Many junk images saved.
- Face recognition does not always work.
- Editing tools are quite basic.
