Already a Clash of Clans (CoC) fan? Then you'll be happy to give Clash Royale a try, as it's a new dimension of the Clash-verse developed by Supercell. If you're not a big fan, you might want to give it a try anyway, as there are many aspects that differentiate the games, and you’ll surely find appealing.

Clash Royale is an exciting, fast-paced, strategy game where you're immersed in real-time battles. The objective of the game is to destroy your opponent’s Towers, while keeping yours safe.

Clash Royale vs. Clash of Clans

Royale and CoC share the same medieval setting and characters, from Giants to Skeletons to Witches, but there are key differences between them.

  • Clash of Clans

If you're already familiar with CoC, you’ve probably spent hours building up your base, which needs to be strategically laid out to make sure it survives during attacks and also to help you destroy your opponents’. Gameplay isn’t real-time: strategies and defenses are planned in advance, and defenses cannot be controlled during enemy attacks.

  • Clash Royale

Clash Royale’s a whole new game which involves collectible cards. You'll find it to be more fast-paced than CoC, as you're engaged in real-time 1v1 strategy battles from the beginning. Instead of building a base, you build decks of cards which feature the characters, defenses, buildings, and spells from the Clash of Clans world to use in battle to destroy your opponent’s Crown Towers and King’s Tower. Since the battles are live, you need to be quick at making decisions on the spot and adapting to what goes on.

Availability

Clash Royale is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play Store for Android phones and tablets. Additionally, the game is available on Google Play Games for PC.

Keep in mind that the minimum specifications for mobile devices demand at least 1 GB of RAM and Android 5.0 or iOS 12.0 or better, but these won't necessarily be enough for the game to run smoothly. The better your device, the better the game will perform, as it features high-end graphics and sound that demand a lot of resources. And, of course, with a more powerful device you're likely to experience fewer crashes.

Playing Clash Royale for the first time

You can get easily overwhelmed when playing Royale for the first time, but fortunately there's a "Tutorial mode" that helps you learn the basics to get you started.

The Arena is called "Training Camp", and you'll have a set of six Cards in your deck. You're taken through three battles within the tutorial, with The King as your guide. An important objective during the first battle in this Arena is to have more than eight Cards, which is a requirement to play multiplayer games. As you move on, you'll get a wooden Chest with Gold and Cards, some of which are rare. Completing the last battle, "The Final Test", you get a Silver Chest with more cards, and 100 Gems.

You're free to go back to the Training Camp whenever you feel like practicing or testing out card combinations. What happens in the Training Camp stays in the Training Camp: you won't win Chests or Crowns, nor win or lose Trophies.

The bottom line

Whoever said that games are a waste of time could learn a thing or two about the multiple skills that are developed through gameplay. From strategic thinking to problem-solving skills, Clash Royale helps you boost cognitive functions, and guarantees hours of fun. It might take time to learn the ins and outs of the game, but it’s definitely worth giving it a try.

  • Free to play.
  • Regular updates keep the game engaging.
  • Superb graphics and sound effects.

  • Steep learning curve in game strategy.
