Google Meet, Skype and WhatsApp all let you make calls and connect across mobile platforms, but they serve different habits. Meet is oriented toward video meetings and Google Workspace, Skype combines calling with chat and file sharing, and WhatsApp puts everyday messaging and calling in one place.
The comparison below weighs their Google Play ratings and reach alongside their features, costs and trade-offs, so you can decide which fits your calls and contacts.
We compared the Google Play ratings and install counts, along with price, in-app purchases and ad status. Store figures were read on November 7, 2026; ratings and installs can change over time.
We also considered each app’s stated calling, messaging, sharing and collaboration features, plus the strengths and trade-offs identified for each. WhatsApp’s Google Play data-safety declaration says it shares no data with third parties, collects several categories of information, encrypts data in transit and lets users request deletion. No data-safety declaration was available for the other two in this comparison.
Best forGoogle Workspace users and structured video meetings
Google LLC
Meet is the clearest fit for video-first meetings: it combines high-quality calls with screen sharing, real-time captions and Google Workspace integration. Its 10 billion-plus installs and 4.4 Google Play rating show broad reach, and basic use is free with no in-app purchases or ads.
The trade-off is that Meet requires a Google account, and its free version has limits, including a one-hour cap for group calls. Compared with WhatsApp’s everyday messaging focus and Skype’s broader calling and file-sharing mix, Meet is less suited to casual, all-purpose communication.
Best forCross-platform calls, screen sharing and file sharing
Skype
Skype brings free voice and video calls together with messaging and file sharing, making it a flexible option when a conversation needs more than a call. It supports group calls and screen sharing, and its 4.4 Google Play rating is close to Meet’s.
Its interface can feel more complex than WhatsApp’s, while the identified trade-offs include call drops and limited free features. Skype is free to download, but it also offers in-app purchases; unlike Meet, it is not positioned around Google Workspace collaboration.
Best forEveryday private calls with people in your contacts
WhatsApp LLC
WhatsApp is the strongest everyday choice if the people you want to reach already use it: chat, voice calls and video calls sit together in a user-friendly app, with support for varied media. It has the highest Google Play rating of these three at 4.6 and more than 10 billion installs. Its data-safety declaration also says messages are encrypted in transit and that it shares no data with third parties.
The main drawback is that WhatsApp requires a phone number, so it is less suited to people who want an account independent of their number. Its focus on messaging is also a less direct fit than Meet for Workspace meetings or Skype for screen sharing and file-sharing needs.
