Yahoo was one of the most popular email service providers after the development of the personal computer. The service was launched in 1997 by the American company Yahoo, Inc. and, nowadays, it still remains one of the most popular providers, together with Gmail and Outlook.
How to create an account
The Yahoo! Mail app is available for iOS and Android devices. To download the app, go to the App Store or Google Play app and search for the Yahoo! Mail app. Once you find it, tap the Install button. Then open the app and log in if you already have an account, or register if you are new to Yahoo!
To create an account, simply follow the steps presented to you in the app. You will be asked to provide the following information:
- Your name
- An email address
- A password
- A mobile phone number (for verification and account recovery purposes)
- Your date of birth (to confirm you comply with the age requirements: you must be 13 years old or older to create an account)
Yahoo!+
In addition to the classic features of Yahoo!, with the Yahoo!+ paid membership you get other perks that take the user experience to the next level:
- Add-free email: With the paid subscription, you will be able to enjoy your email inbox and the whole Yahoo! world without distracting ads on the side.
- Temporary email addresses: With Yahoo!+ you will be able to create "disposable" email addresses for those occasions when you do not want to provide your real email address. You can create up to 500 temporary addresses and delete them once you are done using them.
- 5 TB of email storage: Forget about deleting emails to have more space available in your inbox. With Yahoo!+ you will have plenty of space to store emails and attachments without the burden of your inbox filling up.
- Auto-forwarding: With Yahoo!+ you can set up your account to forward incoming emails to another email account so you can stay on top of all your correspondence.
- Emails to yourself: Send yourself emails with lists, photos, and attachments, and find them all easily in one place.
- 24/7 customer support: If you have an issue with your account, with Yahoo!+ you have access to customer support at all times.
- Free trial: If you are not sure about getting the paid subscription for your Yahoo! account, you can go for the 14-day free trial.
Security features
Over the years, email service providers have had to develop different security methods to keep their users and their information secure. These are some features provided by Yahoo! Mail:
- Recovery method: If you lose your password, need to verify your identity, or are signing in from an unfamiliar location, Yahoo! Mail will corroborate your identity through a recovery method, which can be a phone number or a different email address linked to your Yahoo! Mail account.
- 2-step verification: If you enable the 2-step verification on your account, every time you log in from a new device or browser, you will be asked to provide a password and, then, an additional verification code will be sent to you via phone to corroborate your identity.
- Unusual activity: On your Yahoo! Mail account you can keep track of your online activity and see if your account has been accessed by an unauthorised person. If you see that your account has been accessed from a location that is strange to you, remove all connected devices from your list and change your password.
- Blocked access: If you try to access your Yahoo! Account from a third-party app or platform that has outdated security protocols, Yahoo! Mail will block your access by default.
Pros:
- Asks for very little personal information.
- Safe provider.
- Has been around for quite a while.
Cons:
- Add-free version only if you pay a membership.
- Can be a bit behind when compared to its competitors.
- Some users complain that it does not filter spam correctly.
