With smart homes, the future is here. Imagine turning the lights on or off, adjusting the heat, or setting the alarm just by saying a command or using your phone. Well, that's what a smart home is about! And Google Home is the ideal assistant to make it all happen.
The Google Home app is an all-in-one platform that works its magic with the compatible devices in your home: you can set them up, manage and control them, and all from your phone or tablet!
Getting started
The Google Home app is available for iOS and Android devices. You may download it from the App Store for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) or from the Google Play Store for Android devices (mobile phone, tablet, Wear OS).
When you run the app for the first time, you’re asked to log in with a Google account. Next, you have to “Create a home”, and let Google Home look for devices to connect to it.
There are five sections at the bottom of the main screen:
- Favorites: keeps your most important devices, automations, and actions at hand.
- Devices: shows the devices that are linked to the house.
- Automations: by creating automations you can get your devices to make your home “safer, more convenient and more efficient”. You can create Household or Personal Routines.
- Activity: shows a history of important events in your home, such as activity detected by linked cameras, or network issues.
- Settings: from this section you can add family members and edit permissions, and add and set up features, services, and everything related to your Home.
Setting up a routine
One of the best ways for Google Home to help you is by automating a set of tasks. It’s easy as setting up a trigger that initiates different actions, creating an automated sequence known as a “Routine”.
There are some useful Google Home-made routines included in the app, like “Good morning”. This one’s great to get your day going. To set it up:
- Open the Google Home app on your device, and go to Automations.
- Select “Good morning”.
- Choose how to trigger the routine. You may add a starter of your own, or use any of the default phrases available, like (“Hey Google,”) “good morning”, “tell me about my day” or “I’m up”.
- Select the actions that will be performed. Some commonly used tasks include “Tell me about the weather”, and “Tell me about my commute to work”. You could also ask it to play some music, or turn the lights on!
- Tap the “Save” button to save your morning routine automation.
You’re done! Easy as pie. Now, all you have to do first thing in the morning is say “Hey Google, I’m up” (or any of the other phrases you set up) and get ready to watch or hear the routine unfold.
Compatibility with smart devices
Google Home is compatible with many different devices, from Google to Matter ones, and thousands more! To ensure compatibility, look for the badges "Works with Google Home" or "Matter".
When setting up a new smart device in its app, it’ll also indicate if it’s compatible with Google Home. This makes the setup process a lot easier, and you’ll be able to connect your device to Google Home right away.
Conclusion
Smart homes are revolutionizing our lives, and while they may seem overwhelming, Google Home has you covered. It seamlessly brings everything together, letting you control everything on the go, from the palm of your hand.
