Google Fit is a fitness app, Google's way of "coaching you to a healthier and more active life". It's a simple, easy-to-use app which also connects with several other fitness trackers, making it a good hub to see all your data in one place. On its own, Google Fit can track your daily steps, calories burned, distance, move minutes and Heart Points.

Availability

Google Fit is the default fitness app for Wear OS smartwatches, but it's also available on other devices such as Android smartphones and tablets and iOS devices, namely iPhones and iPads. You can download Google Fit for free from both Google Play Store and the App Store.

Get going: the first steps

Once you install the app, you sign in using an existing personal Google Account and enter your personal data, such as date of birth, gender, weight and height. Then, you can enable the tracking of activities such as walking, running and cycling. If you opt out of this feature, you can still track them manually. Additionally, you can allow the app to use your location to map your walks, runs, and bike rides. All this allows Google Fit to get accurate workout-related metrics, but keep in mind that it will also collect location data when you're not working out.

After granting the app the required permissions, you're prompted to set your activity goals, which are basically reaching a set number of steps and Heart Points. Heart Points are scored by engaging in intense activities, those that get your heart pumping. The more you exercise and the more intense your workouts are, the more Heart Points you'll score. From fast walks to HIIT, everything counts. Set your daily goals by choosing any of the three given Heart Points and Steps combinations, and get set for the challenge!

App overview

At the bottom of Google Fit's main screen, you can see four sections: Home, Journal, Browse, and Profile.

  • Home: this section shows your day's activities and metrics, including your Heart Points, Steps, Calories burned, distance and move minutes, but that's not all. You can also see how your performance was in the form of daily, weekly or monthly trends which show how many goals you achieved, how much energy you used, sleep data (if connected to a sleep tracking device) and more. There's also valuable information curated by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the American Heart Organization and the World Health Organization (WHO), and even direct access to YouTube playlists following the Stay Fit #WithMe hashtag.
  • Journal: here you'll find a history log of your workouts. If tracked by smartwatches, they'll appear automatically. Otherwise, you can add them manually using the "+" icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  • Browse: this section shows additional health data you can track, from body measurements, vitals, nutrition, sleep and cycle tracking. If you connect your Google Fit app with third-party tracking apps, you’ll see all the metrics here.
  • Profile: your personal information and activity goals can be checked and edited from this section.

Third-party apps syncing

Google Fit is compatible with lots of fitness apps, some of the most popular ones include Adidas Running, Adidas Training, Daily Yoga, Lifesum, MyFitnessPal, Nike Training Club, and Zepp. These are but a few, the list is actually extensive!

Conclusion

Google Fit is as simple as it gets, keeping track of health metrics and encouraging you to get and stay healthy. It lacks diet or workout recommendations (which other fitness apps offer), but the fact that it’s completely free and pretty easy to set up and use, makes it the ideal app to get you started in the activity tracking world and help you achieve a more active lifestyle
